I recently entered the golden gates of J. Crew [insert confusion, head scratch, wail, or “what the heck” sentiment here] and made a purchase for the very first time. On its surface, J. Crew has always been pretty people selling pretty items that were pretty expensive for the struggling college student I was. While visiting Orlando’s Mall at Millennia, I decided to take a peek to see what I was missing… and I was really missing a lot.
There’s nothing comparable to the feeling of turning a page. Whether fact or fiction, books have a magical pull to take us into another world or even propel us into our own future. Sophia Amoruso’s #GIRLBOSS has recently dominated my reading list. Amoruso, fashion arbiter and CEO of Nasty Gal, reminds us that sometimes climbing up the generic ladder is the quickest way to go nowhere. After failing to follow suit in college and the workforce, she cultivated one of the fastest growing companies on purse ambition.

Modernity at its best, Miami’s Design District is a gem in the city’s treasure trove. On the rare instances where I venture out of Suburbia, I am captivated by the ultra-cool, ultra-chic, ultra-Miami culture. For my first Creative Mornings Miami session, I wanted to achieve sophisticated and artistic liveliness that ventured beyond “Casual Friday” attire with a geometrical floral dress (What’s Creative Mornings? Something you should know about me is that I drink coffee like any regular human being drinks water to survive. Naturally, when I heard of an event called “Creative Mornings,” where free coffee was being served, I was on board.
Creative Mornings, a breakfast lecture series for the creative community, has expanded to 87 cities internationally since its New York City conception in 2008. The pseudo-TED talk welcomes a monthly speaker to host a 20-minute session about their passions, projects, and ideas. In my first Creative Mornings lecture, Avra Jain inspired a packed house with her discussion on the growth of Miami’s MiMo District.
