At the age of 5, friendship was as easy as letting the other girls in your class borrow your milky pens and occasionally play Baby Spice in your tribute band. My chubby cheeks smiled with glee every time I made a new friend to invite to my next slumber party. I was working the system. In ’94 there weren’t quite as many ludicrously popular boundaries like #NoNewFriends and “you can’t sit with us.” It’s 2015 and the ink in our milky pens has run dry, Posh rules the world, and your Tamagotchi has been replaced with an Apple watch.
From doing taxes (and hopefully getting a tax refund) to painfully shielding your eyes when you realize how much of your paycheck goes to brunch, being an adult is kind of a twisted yet satisfying experience. If there is one thing that triumphs over paying bills or sitting in a desk chair all day in the hierarchy of adulthood quandaries, it’s making friends.
Sitting on my coffee table is my boyfriend’s copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People. I can’t help but scoff at the paperback’s title — okay, Dale Carnegie…let’s pretend it’s easy to win friends in an age where bribing girls with Lunchables is socially unacceptable. This issue plagued me when I decided to move to a new city unpopulated by my past. No one here knows who the hell Jillian Goltzman is…that uncertainty became a paradox that was both beautiful and terrifying in its own right. Who would I be in Houston?
It’s been four months and I’m proud to say that despite the lack of milky pens in my possession, I’ve not only survived but thrived. Here’s what I learned in Adulting 101:

All that glitters is… probably in Adrienne Bosh’s sweet new lifestyle boutique. Adrienne, entrepreneurial powerhouse and proclaimed “sparkle boss,” has been working tirelessly to bring pink flair to South Beach. I interviewed Bosh for a Miami.com story in anticipation for her big announcement: a glittering new shop coming to Miami at the end of this summer. I walked away from this interview with such admiration for her mission to create a space that celebrates and empowers women — my kind of place! This boutique is more than just a pretty place to shop, but a hopeful “haven” to build a community of women that’s overflowing with friendship and support for one another. It was a privilege to interview Adrienne and get a sense of her excitement as her dream comes to fruition. Far off lands and luxurious castles — this may sound like your cliché Disney setting, but two years ago I made it my reality. At 23 years old, I realized that my life felt like it wasn’t my own. Unauthentic and controlled, I had authored chapters in a novel I refused to put my name on. With a passport as my storybook, I decided to take ownership of myself from nearly 5,000 miles away.
